A regular clock divides each day into exactly 24 equal hours of 60 minutes each — regardless of when the sun rises or sets. This was standardised in the 19th century to coordinate railways.

TrueTime shows solar time: sunrise is always 6:00 AM and sunset is always 6:00 PM, every day of the year, wherever you are on Earth. To make this work, each "solar second" stretches or compresses slightly with the seasons — longer in summer, shorter in winter. This is exactly how all pre-industrial cultures experienced time.

This is intentional. Your phone clock shows timezone time — a uniform grid invented for industrial scheduling. TrueTime shows the actual position of the sun in its daily arc. The two diverge throughout the year and depending on where in your timezone you live.

The difference is most noticeable at the edges of a timezone or when Daylight Saving Time is in effect. This divergence is precisely the "social jetlag" that circadian researchers link to metabolic and sleep disruption.

The widget needs the TrueTime app to run at least once to send solar boundary data to the widget. Try these steps:

• Open the TrueTime app and wait for it to display your solar time.
• Wait up to 5 minutes for the widget to refresh automatically.
• If it still shows dashes, long-press the widget and tap Edit Widget, then close — this forces a timeline refresh.

Widgets require iOS 14 or later. Lock screen widgets require iOS 16 or later.

In TrueTime, solar noon is always exactly 12:00 PM — by definition. If you are seeing a different value, your phone clock is showing you where the sun actually reaches its peak in clock time, which varies by your position within your timezone and the time of year (the Equation of Time).

This divergence — sometimes over 30 minutes — is one of the key sources of circadian misalignment. TrueTime eliminates it by anchoring your clock to the sun's actual position.

Yes — TrueTime works at any location on Earth that has a meaningful sunrise and sunset. The NOAA Solar Algorithm it uses is accurate to within a few seconds for most latitudes year-round.

Near the poles (above ~65° latitude) during midsummer or midwinter, the sun may not rise or set for extended periods. TrueTime handles these edge cases gracefully.

Yes. All solar time calculations are performed locally on your device using astronomical formulas. TrueTime does not require an internet connection to show solar time. The only feature that requires internet is the city name search (which contacts an open geocoding service to convert city names to coordinates).

TrueTime is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, no premium tiers, and no advertising. The app simply shows you the sun's time, as nature intended.
