A biohack as old as the sun
Since the first flicker of life on Earth, every cell has synchronized to the sun — not to the timezone on your phone. TrueTime restores the ancient rhythm.
You set your alarm for 7:00 AM. But you wake at 6:52, eight minutes early — alert, eyes open, body already ready. You lie there wondering why sleep abandoned you before it was asked to.
It wasn't restlessness. It was biology doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Deep in your hypothalamus sits the suprachiasmatic nucleus — the SCN — a cluster of roughly 20,000 neurons that has been tracking the sun since long before clocks existed. It receives light directly through the retinohypothalamic tract and begins preparing your body for waking hours before sunrise even touches the horizon.
Your phone's 7:00 AM is an invention from the age of railways — designed for train schedules, not for mammals. The SCN has never heard of Daylight Saving Time.
Studies show a 24% spike in cardiac events in the week after spring DST changes. Traffic accidents increase. Depression and anxiety markers rise. The SCN cannot shift on command — it takes weeks to partially re-entrain to a new light-dark schedule.
Harrison, Y. (2013). Sleep Medicine ReviewsChronobiologist Till Roenneberg discovered that people living on the western edge of time zones experience up to 19 extra minutes of daily circadian misalignment — and have significantly higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression, and cardiovascular disease as a result. He calls this "social jetlag."
Roenneberg et al. (2012). Current Biology"Circadian clocks have evolved to anticipate the solar day and coordinate physiology and behaviour accordingly. Disruption of this clock — whether by shift work, jet lag, or social schedules — is increasingly recognised as a major risk factor for human disease."
For ten thousand years of human civilisation, noon meant one thing: the sun was directly overhead. Sunrise was always 6 AM. Sunset was always 6 PM. Every hour, every minute, every second — a fraction of the arc the sun traced across the sky that day.
This changed in 1847, when British railways demanded standardised time across the country to synchronise train schedules. Within fifty years, the world had abandoned the sun and locked itself to mechanical clocks. For the first time in history, our official "time of day" became untethered from the actual position of the sun.
Our biology never got the memo.
TrueTime makes sunrise exactly 6:00 AM every day, everywhere on Earth — by allowing each solar second to stretch or compress slightly with the seasons. In midsummer, when days are long, daytime solar seconds are fractionally longer than a mechanical second. In midwinter, shorter.
The Romans called these horae temporales — seasonal hours. The same concept underpins Islamic prayer timing, Vedic astrology, the monastic Hours of Christianity, and the waterclock traditions of ancient Egypt. Every pre-industrial culture on Earth organised its day this way.
The case for solar living isn't mystical — it's molecular, Nobel Prize-winning, and rapidly becoming the frontier of preventive medicine.
In 2017, Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the molecular mechanism of circadian clocks. Clock genes — period, timeless, cryptochrome — form a self-sustaining 24-hour feedback loop in virtually every cell of your body. Disrupting this loop has measurable consequences on health.
The suprachiasmatic nucleus receives direct sunlight input via the retinohypothalamic tract and acts as the body's master pacemaker. Critically, it entrains to actual sunrise and sunset — not to clock time. Every peripheral organ (liver, heart, gut, pancreas) runs its own subordinate circadian clock, all synchronized by signals from the SCN.
Till Roenneberg's landmark study of 55,000 people found that each hour of social jetlag — misalignment between biological and social clocks — increases the odds of being overweight by 33%. The effect is independent of sleep duration. It's not how much you sleep. It's when, relative to the sun.
Blood pressure medication taken at bedtime (aligned with circadian dipping) reduces cardiovascular events by 45% compared to morning dosing. Cancer chemotherapy timed to circadian peaks can halve toxicity while maintaining efficacy. Meal timing aligned to solar rhythm improves insulin sensitivity, weight, and lipid profiles independent of calorie intake.
Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, ancient Greek humoral theory — every pre-industrial healing tradition organised the day around the sun's arc. This wasn't superstition. It was empirically discovered chronobiology, thousands of years ahead of its time.
Cortisol begins its morning surge roughly 45 minutes before sunrise — your body's built-in alarm. Avoid artificial blue light after waking; instead, expose your eyes to dawn light to fully suppress residual melatonin and anchor your SCN to today's actual sunrise.
Your liver clock peaks in insulin sensitivity in early solar morning. Eating your first meal at solar 7–8 AM — regardless of what the wall clock says — optimises glucose metabolism and fat oxidation for the entire day. Time-restricted eating aligned to solar rhythm outperforms caloric restriction alone.
Muscle strength, reaction time, cardiovascular efficiency, and working memory all peak in the hours surrounding solar noon. This is the body's evolved performance window — millions of years in the making, designed to align with maximum sunlight for hunting, building, creating.
The orange-red light of dusk — low in blue wavelengths — signals your pineal gland to begin melatonin synthesis. Watching sunset directly for even 10 minutes programs the pineal to release melatonin at the right time. Artificial LED light at this hour disrupts the signal and can delay sleep onset by 1–3 hours.
Anthropological studies of pre-electric societies show near-universal sleep onset at solar 9–10 PM — approximately 3 hours after dusk — across very different climates, latitudes, and cultures. This is not coincidence. It is the body's deepest programming.
